Job Summary:

San Francisco Friends School seeks an experienced Middle School math teacher who is compelled by the school’s mission and committed to progressive math education. 

Mathematics at Friends is an inquiry-based, conceptual, hands-on program where students grapple with problems and make meaning of the mathematics for themselves. We strive to build the capacity in students to think mathematically, solve problems with confidence, and love mathematics. Teachers are engaged in regular collaboration, curriculum development, and pedagogical reflection to offer the most meaningful, responsive, and student-centered program possible.  

Candidates should have a strong math background with experience teaching algebraic concepts and be invested in collaborating with colleagues and working closely with students.

Math Department Responsibilities:

  • Teach Upper Middle School level math, including algebraic concepts
  • Support close teamwork for curriculum development, committee involvement, and student assessment 
  • Help organize and lead middle school-wide, fun math-focused events
  • Prepare timely and attentive parent communications, including quarterly student progress reports 
  • Engage with parents and guardians about math content, approach, and philosophy in both proactive and responsive ways, including an evening event 

Duties and Responsibilities Outside of the Department

  • Serve as a middle school advisor, supporting a small group of students academically, socially, and emotionally throughout the school year. Facilitate three weekly advisory meetings, student-led conferences, and family communication, fostering a strong sense of belonging and a growth mindset.
  • Collaborate with fellow middle school teachers to plan interdisciplinary units
  • Support and participate in school-wide events, service learning, and community-building activities and events.
  • Contribute to the life of the middle school through participation in team meetings and professional development.
  • Supervise students during breaks and lunch periods
  • Foster a classroom culture that is welcoming, inclusive, and affirming of all students’ identities and backgrounds.
  • Integrate culturally responsive pedagogy and reflect on teaching practice through the lens of equity and justice.
  • Attend annual Field Studies overnight program, as well as various field-based curricular and cultural explorations
 

Qualifications

Must demonstrate: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher, in mathematics
  • Four or more years of experience teaching middle school math, including algebra
  • Love and appreciation for middle school students
  • Openness to Quaker philosophy
  • Highly collaborative and creative team player

Preferred Qualities:

  • Advanced degree in mathematics or mathematics education 
  • Knowledge of current pedagogy and facility with hands-on and project-based instruction
 

Compensation and Benefit Summary: 

Competitive, exempt salary based on experience and qualifications. Excellent benefits are offered, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and matching 403(b). 

$2,916.67 to $6,407.50 semi-monthly pay period for 24 pay periods per year ($70,000 to $153,780 if annualized). Placement on the step scale based on relevant teaching experience.
